CAMPUS LIFE

     A Mirandian is known not only for her academic excellence but also for her involvement in extra curricular activities. Miranda House has always encouraged its students to interact and participate in diverse activities outside the classroom. Such is the range of opportunities that through out the year, the auditorium, the common rooms, the cafeteria and the lawns buzz with passionate and vibrant patter of budding actors, journalists, singers, writers, painters, social workers and political activists.

The various clubs and societies document the changing face of our society and that of Miranda House. They trace the evolution of individual talent of every student as she experiments and explores her own potential. Aiding this growth in the formative years are the faculty who relentlessly match zeal for zeal and prod the students to aim for the very best.

The college is committed to nurturing talent and celebrating the diversity of student potential. The cultural societies provide a forum to students where they can give expression to their creativity in myriads of ways. When in Miranda, we urge you to make the most of unmatched opportunities provided to chisel your individual aspirations.

The Student Union

   

Each student of Miranda House is a member of the Students' Union and annually participates in the election of office-bearers, namely, the President, Vice-President , Secretary, Presidents of six cultural societies viz. Debating, Hindi Dramatics, English Dramatics, Fine Arts, Quiz, Music, Dance & Choreography and Presidents of Sports ad Hostel Union. Elections are held in the first term except for the office of the Hostel Union President. The Principal of the college is the patron of the Students' Union. The Students' Union is affiliated to the Delhi University Students' Union, DUSU. The programmes of the Students' Union are framed with the prior approval of the Principal. The meetings of the General Body of the union are also arranged with the prior permission of the Principal. Neither the Students' Union nor any society arranges any programme! meeting connected with any political party. These rules will remain in force notwithstanding any provision made elsewhere.

FILM CLUB

For those who are interested in learning the language of cinema and for those who are just plain movie buffs, Celluloid, the Film Club, offers a wide variety ranging from the popular to the parallel. Discussions with filmmakers and critical analysis form a part of the activities. In the year 2013-14 the club stressed on promoting awareness about modern world issues by screening various Hindi, English and regional movies at as Table No. 21, Memories in March and Chokher Bali. The film club was a host to renowned film Director Imtiaz Ali and actress Alia Bhatt, as part of the promotion of the movie 'Highway'. Themed around the word Freedom, a competition between various performing arts societies of the college and Alfred Hitchcock Film Festival were also held. ADVENTURE CLUB The Miranda House Adventure Club was started in 2006 by enthusiastic students and faculty members. On 16 July 2008 it was registered in the College Constitution as Saahas...Feel the Risk. The motto of the club is We Take Fun Seriously. The club aims at encouraging students to go beyond their perceived limits, develop self-reliance, self-discipline, and team work. Activities like River Rafting Expeditions, Trekking, Rope Rappelling that focus on nurturing the ability to plan, organize and take decisions, and foster qualities of cooperation, time management, leadership, and problem solving are organized each year by specialists in the field. Debsoc, The Debating Society The Debating Society of Miranda House provides a forum through which students can hone their oratory and analytical skills while learning to work as a team, optimize available resources and organize exciting events, often on a mega scale. The Society organizes several intra as well as inter-college debates. Debsoc initiated the concept of the Seminar-Debate that was launched with Revolution-2002, an inter-university debate that drew participants from several cities in India. In 2004, it carried the proud tradition forward by organizing Manzar, another seminar-debate, this time with participants from Pakistan and from India. Continuing the series, in 2005, it spearheaded the process of selecting a Delhi University team to participate in the Second Indo-Pak Student Seminar-Debate at Lahore. Miranda House was invited by the Pakistan Debating Society to Lahore again in 2006. In 2007, Manzar was expanded to include not just Pakistan, but also Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and to draw Indian participation from leading institutions across the country. Members of the Debating Society routinely participate in several Model UN events as well most national level debating competitions. Our students have also participated in the international debates at London School of Economics and University College, London. The Debating Society of Miranda House provides a platform for creative and interpretative expression of ideas and to nurture the talent of public speaking. Students also get a hands on experience of organizing, adjudicating and coordinating various events. The Debating Society activities complement and enrich the idea of a holistic education that Miranda House is known for. DRAMATICS HINDI ‘अनुकृति’   हिन्दी नाट्य समिति मिराँडा हाउस की हिन्दी नाट्य समिति ‘अनुकृति’ दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के नाट्य समूहों (Theatre Groups ) में अग्रणी स्थान रखती है । छात्राएँ इससे जुडकर एक ओर समूह भावना से काम करना सीखती हैं, दूसरी ओर व्यक्तिगत स्तर पर एक विशेष प्रकार के आत्मविश्वास से भरपूर होकर यह पाती हैं कि लगन ओर मेहनत हो तो कुछ भी असँभव नहीं। वास्तव में ‘अनुकृति’ मिराँडा हाउस की ही भाँति एक समृद्ध धरोहर है। 1957 से आरंभ हुई इस नाट्य समिति ने  थियेटर के  अनेक सितारों को जमीन प्रदान की है । मिरांडा हाउस का विशाल प्रेक्षाग्रह  (Auditorium ) है।जहाँ कई महत्वपूर्ण प्रस्तुतियाँ सफलतापूर्वक मंचित की गईं हैं ।  हर वर्ष इस नाट्य समिति हेतु प्रथम वर्ष की छात्राओं का चुनाव नाट्य-कार्यशाला( theatre work shop) के माध्यम से किया जाता है । छात्राएँ प्रतिवर्ष एक नुक्कड नाटक, एक एकाँकी और एक पूर्णकालिक नाटक  प्रस्तुत करती हैं। इन सब प्रस्तुतियों के किए लम्बे अभ्यास (रिहर्सलस) के दौरान  छात्राओं में अनुशासन ,कठिन परिश्रम और  कार्य हेतु समर्पण,और समूह (Team) का भाव विकसित होता है । ‘अनुकृति’ न केवल एक एक समिति है अपितु इस नाट्य समिति ने जागरूकता प्रदान करने में  महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है। ‘अनुकृति’ प्रति वर्ष जिस नुक्कड नाटक को प्रस्तुत करती है,वह सदैव ज्वलंत प्रश्नों से जुडा होता है । इस वर्ष का नुक्क्ड नाटक”गुमराह“ किशोर अपराधी और न्याय प्रणाली से जुडा हुआ है । यह भी गौर करने योग्य बात है कि नुक्कड नाटक के विषय का चुनाव, लेखन और प्रस्तुतिकरण छात्राओं द्वारा ही किया जाता है ।‘अनुकृति’ छात्राओं को विचार ,कर्म और अनुशासन का पाठ पढाती है ।मिराँडा हाऊस छात्राओं को अध्ययन के साथ ही रंगकर्म का भरपूर माहौल प्रस्तुत करता है और साथ ही रंगकर्म के प्रति गंभीर दायित्व भी सिखाता है ।नाटक का मंचन करते समय मंच पर और और मंच से परे प्रबंधन भी छात्राएं सिखती हैं । अभिनय के साथ ही रंगमंच के विविध पक्षों नृत्य ,गति ,मुद्राओं, नाट्य-संवाद आदि की भी जानकारी दी जाती है। समय-समय पर आयोजित स्वतंत्र नाट्य कार्यशालाओं में भी छात्राएँ अभिनय के साथ ही स्क्रिप्ट लेखन संगीत एवं प्रकाश परियोजना आदि में भी प्रशिक्षित होती हैं । प्रति वर्ष अनुकृति अनेक पुरस्कार जीतती है | इस वर्ष (2012) अगस्त से लेकर दिसम्बर तक अनुकृति की उपलब्धियाँ इस प्रकार हैं : मौलाना आज़ाद मेडिकल कॉलेज द्वितीय  पुरस्कार स्कूल ऑफ इंस्पारय स्टडिज(गुडगांव ) द्वितीय पुरस्कार आई आई टी कानपुर के वार्षिक उत्सव ‘अंतराग्नि’ में नुक्कड नाटक विशेष पुरस्कार एकांकी ‘टैक्स फ्री” (जो दृष्टि बाधित लोगो पर आधारित है) अभिनय हेतु प्रियंका को प्रथम पुरस्कार तथा थियेटर कोर्स करने के लिए विशेष पुरस्कार एवम दो लाख रूपये की फेलोशिप। कांनपुर आई.आई टी. में नुक्कड नाटक ‘गुमराह’ विशेष प्रशंसा पुरस्कार एवम ‘अस्मिता’ थियेटर ग्रुप और दिल्ली प्रोलोफिक थियेटर गुप की ओर से कार्यशाला का पुरस्कार  अपने शानदार अतीत से लेकर वर्तमान तक ‘अनुकृति’ ने अनेक सफल प्रस्तुतियाँ दी है।केवल हिन्दी ही नहीं बंगाली (कांचन रंग ,रक्तकरबी ),तमिल (सिल्पाद्दीकारकम—सुहाग के नुपुर ),मराठी ( राजा माँगे पसीना ),संस्कृत ( स्वप्नवासवदत्ता,धूर्त समागम,मृच्छकटिकम ),ग्रीक (ट्रोय की औरतें ),रूसी (दुल्हन ) आदि भाषाओं में लिखे नाट्कों का मंचन किया गया है । शैली की दृष्टि से विविध नाट्य  शैलियों में जैसे भवई,(जसमा ओडन )बेदेसिया (खबसूरत बहू),पारसी,( ख्वाबे हस्ती ,खूबसूरत बला ) आदि।  अनुकृति की प्रस्तुतियां: 1957   गोदान    प्रेमचंद के प्रसिद्ध उपन्यास गोदान पर आधारित यह नाटक भारतीय ग्राम व्यवस्था में किसानों की स्थिति - औद्योगिकीकरण और किसान के मजदूर बनने की कथा कहता है। 1962   गुडिया घर  -  इब्सन के प्रसिद्ध नाटक डाल्स हाउस पर आधारित यह नाटक स्त्री की दशा और और उसके मुक्त होने की आकांक्षा पर आधारित है जहाँ पति स्त्री को सिर्फ गुडिया बनाकर रखना चाहता है परंतु वह उस गुडियाघर को छोड कर आगे बढ जाती है । 1966  ये घर ये लोग - नरेश मेहता के लिखे इस नाटक में टूतते हुए संयुक्त परिवार परिवार की कथा  को कहा गया जो तमाम कोशिशों के बावजूद बदलते हुए परिवेश में टिक नहीं पाता ।1967    काँचनरंग    शंभुमित्र के बंगला नाटक का हिन्दी रूपातंरण प्रस्तुत किया गया। आज के युग में पैसा कैसे आदमी के सम्बन्धों को बदलता है इस नाटक में यह प्रस्तुत किया गया। 1972     माँ     मैक्सिमम गोर्की के उपन्यास का नाटय रूपांतरण पेश किया गया । माँ यहाँ  केवल बच्चोको प्यार करने वाली परंपरागत महिला ही नहीं है अपितु सतत संघर्ष करते हुए क्रांति में सक्रिय योगदान भी देती है । 1973         यरमा     लोर्का द्वारा रचित इस नाटक में निस्संतान स्त्री की व्यथा और स्त्री सम्मान के प्रश्न को उठाया गया है। 1978    आषाढ का एक दिन   मोहन राकेश द्वारा लिखित इस नाटक में कवि कालीदास और उनकी प्रेयसी मल्लिका के द्वारा स्त्री-पुरुष संबंधों, मानव जीवन की जटिलता ,सृजनशील व्यक्ति और परिवेश,कलाकार और राज्याश्रय सभी स्तरों को छूता है । 1979    बिना दीवारों का घर  मन्नू भंडारी द्वारा लिखित इस नाटक में पुरुष प्रधान समाज में नारी की  स्थिति को दर्शाया गया है जहाँ जब वह अपने पति से पद और श्रेष्ठ हो जाती है तो पति कुंठा ग्रस्त होकर उसे हर बात पर लांछित करता है। 1981   खेला पोलमपुर   मणिमधुकर द्वारा रचित यह नाट्क राजस्थान की एक लोककथा पर आधारित है जो एक तानाशाह के विरूद्ध जन विद्रोह की गाथा को कहता है । 1982    ‘बूढी काकी’ और ‘सवा सेर गेहूँ’     प्रेमचंद की कहानियों पर आधारित एकांकीयों  का मंचन किया गया । 1987     ट्रॉय की औरतें    युरेपीडिज द्वारा लिखित इस नाटक में ट्रोय युद्ध के बाद औरतों की स्थिति को बताया गया है । 1986-87   एक थी हँसमुख दे    मृणाल पाण्डे की कहानी पर आधारित एक संगीतात्मक एकाँकी प्रस्तुत की गई ।यह एकांकी मिथकों के माध्यम में नारी स्वतंत्रता और साहस की कहानी कहती है । 1994      सुहाग के नुपुर     प्रसिद्ध तमिल लेखक इलंगोवन  की रचना पर आधारित सुहाग के नुपुर तत्कालीन समाज राजनीति और स्त्री पुरुष संबंधों की कथा कहता है । 1994      लहरों के राजहंस      मोहन राकेश के नाटक में एतिहासिक और सांस्कृतिक परिवेश के माध्यम से मनुष्य़ की प्रवृति और निवृति की कथा को कहता है । 1995      ध्रुवस्वामिनी       जयशंकर प्रसाद द्वारा लिखित इस नाटक में नारी अस्मिता के प्रश्न को उठाया गया है । 1996    रेशमी रूमाल      त्रिपुरारी शर्मा द्वारा लिखित  इस नाटक में मध्यवर्गीय परिवार में स्त्रियों की स्थिति उनकी घुटन और व्यथा की कथा को कहा गया है । 1997   जसमा ओडन   गुजरात की लोककथा पर आधारित इस नाटक में जसमा के  माध्यम से आम स्त्री और उसके साहस की कथा को कहा गया है । 1998    स्वप्नवासवदत्ता     और    धूर्त समागम    का मंचन किया गया ।भास द्वारा रचित स्वप्नवासवदत्ता में वासवदत्ता का त्याग समंवित प्रेम और राष्ट्र भावना को केन्द्र में रखा गया है । ज्योतिरिश्वर द्वारा रचित  धूर्त समागम  कपटी लोगों पर सशक्त प्रहसन है    2000    ख्वाबे हस्ती   आगा हश्र कश्मीरी  के नाटक में ईमान और आत्मसम्मान की कथा को हुस्ना के माध्यम से कहा गया है । 2002    इला   स्त्री के लिंग परिवर्तन और उसके पुरुष  के रूप में आने वाली समस्याओं को इस नाटक में दर्शाया गया है । 2004   साँच कहूँ तो    प्रभाकर श्रोत्रिय द्वारा रचित इस नाटक में मध्यकालीन नारी के दमन और अपमान की कथा कही गई है ।हजार वर्ष पूर्व नरपति माल्ह द्वारा रचे गए काव्य बीसल देव रासो की मूल कथा जो राजमति पर आधारित है ,इसका आधार है ।इस नाटक में पुरुष दंभ और हठ के समक्ष राजमति अपनी अस्मिता बचाए रखती है । 2006  खूबसूरत बला  आगा हश्र कश्मीरी द्वारा रचित इस पारसी नाटक का निर्देशन मिरांडा हाऊस की पूर्व छात्रा हेमा सिंह ने किया ।यह नाटक बदी पर नेकी की,अत्याचार पर मानवता की विजय की कहानी कहता है । 2007     गदर के साये में दास्तान एक शहजादी की    1857 के गदर की डेढ सौवी जयंती पर वागीश सिंह द्वारा लिखे गए इस नाटक को हेमा सिंह ने निर्देशित किया ।1857 के गदर में बहादुर शाह जफर के खानदान पर क्या गुजरी ,खास तौर पर औरतों पर। एक अनाम शहजादी की दास्तान करूणा पूर्ण स्वरों में यह कथा कहती है । 2009    मृच्छकटिकम  संस्कृत नाटककार शूद्र्क द्वारा रचित इस नाटक में चारुदत्त और वारांगना वसंतसेना के मध्य उपजे प्रेम के माध्यम से तत्कालीन समाज व्यव्स्था और राजनीति को दर्शाया गया है । 2010    ट्रॉय की औरतें     युरेपीडिज द्वारा रचित इस नाटक में टॉय युद्ध के बाद युद्ध की विभिषिका को सहती औरतों की कथा को कहा गया है जिसमें उनके पति मारे गए और वे बंदी या रखैल बना ली गईं अथवा आत्म हत्या करने पर मजबूर हुईं । 2011    रक्त करोबी     रवीन्द्रनाथ के नाट्क पर आधारित प्रस्तुत नाटक में यांत्रिकता और मानवीयता के बीच संघर्ष दिखाया गया है । 2012     सीढियाँ        प्रस्तुत नाटक में मोहम्म्द शाह रंगीले के समय को प्रस्तुत करते हुए तत्कालीन समय के माध्यम से आधुनिक राजनीति की विसंगतियों को प्रस्तुत किया है ।  ENGLISH The Ariels, the English Dramatics Society            Ariels, the English Dramatic Society, has been producing plays since the 1950s. Ariels has always pioneered out of the ordinary productions and been a trendsetter in its use of innovative directorial devices, all of which have received appreciation in the past. Over the year students discover their interests and organize themselves into the many teams that provide support for lights, sound, set design and of course, script writing, production and acting. Ariels was invited to take part in the prestigious Ibsen Festival'10. The Dramatic Art & Design Academy (DADA) selected Ariels as one of the only five colleges that were to perform in the Little Theatre Group (LTG) Auditorium in September 2010. Two scripts were merged for this project Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House and Mohan Rakesh's Aadhe Adhure. The end product, illustrative of Ariels ventures, brought together not only both the scripts but also different cultures and time periods. Ariels also participated in the reputed Old World Festival at the India Habitat Center. In 2013-2014 Ariels produced an adaptation of Neil Simon's play Good Doctor. Ariels also inaugurated Vaudeville a stage play festival with a participation of several theatre societies from different colleges. FINE ARTS Adwitiya, The Fine Arts Society Adwitiya, the Fine Arts Society, is an integral and indispensable part of Miranda House. It organizes competitions in sketching, rangoli, cartoon and poster making and much more. The colourful rangolis, the artistic stage décor and information displays add quality and much more importantly, a special welcoming touch to all events. The Society regularly organizes workshops and exhibitions for the benefit of students. Some popular workshops are on pottery, origami, Madhubani painting, Playing with Clay, Best Out of Waste, Graffiti, T-shirt designing etc. Foreign Students Association In the fall of 2009 the Foreign Students Association held a luncheon where the students brought food their home countries and got to interact with other foreign students. On 11 September 2009, a candlelight vigil was held in the Hostel in remembrance of all the people whose lives were lost or changed forever because of acts of terror both on American and Indian soil. In December 2009, the Foreign Students took a field trip to Red Fort, Gandhi Smriti and Dilli Haat and learned about the culture and history of Delhi. In January 2010 the Foreign Students hosted a movie screening with attendance of over 100 girls to promote thought about the interactions between natives and foreigners. Besides these official activities throughout the year, the Foriegn Students Association compiled a database of all the foreign students in Miranda House along with their course, country of origin and phone number. Also a group of foreign students attended a workshop in the Arts Faculty hosted by Pehel on promoting dialogue between the police, the proctor of the university, college principals and students from other countries and Northeast India. They also networked to help each other find Hindi tutors, discover ways to transfer money internationally, locate safe places to live, and to help each other navigate Indian bureaucracy. On 5 March, the Thai students organised the Thai International Day. The Ambassador of Thailand in India along with his spouse and officials participated actively in the mesmerizingly beautiful programme that included chanting of Buddhist hymns, traditional dances, music, a display of martial arts, and a film highlighting the culture and the historical sights of Thailand.

HISTORY

Miranda House, residential college for women, is one of the premier Women's Institutions of Delhi University. It was founded in 1948 by the then Vice-Chancellor Sir Maurice Gwyer; its foundation stone was laid by Lady Edwina Mountbatten on March 7 in the same year. Located on the University campus, Miranda House is built in warm red brick with cool and spacious verandahs. Its original design was by the renowned architect Walter George, the college shares an architectural affinity with other colonial educational institutions of the country. In the past five decades, as the college has grown, several other buildings have been added to its original design. It is now declared a heritage building and work is on to maintain its pristine glory.

Miranda offers liberal education in humanities and science to more than 2500 students. The faculty is renowned for their meritorious profile, versatile talent and dedication to the cause of education. The college has produced women who have excelled in various professions and have contributed in numerous ways to society at large.

The college has always maintained high academic standards. What is more important is the space it has provided to the students to freely express and develop views that help them respond to changes in society. Its proximity to other campus colleges enables students to participate in the academic and cultural events that take place around it.

The college also has a hostel, which happens to be amongst the oldest residential buildings of the University. The hostel has recently been renovated under the Heritage Building Project. The hostel section is laid out in a pleasing quadrangle, with gardens paced out by bottle palms. The design allows a spacious privacy within which residents can be as they like. The dining hall is one of the assets of the college with monastic tables and benches set along a long hall. The stretch of ground curving around the hostel towards the Cafeteria has been cleared away for a beautiful lawn and a rockery extending the social attractions of the Cafeteria, particularly on sunny winter days. It has also brought out the potential of the balcony outside the student's common room as an elevated stage for cultural events.
